WUR and WLR

WUR. Stichting Wageningen Research consists of 12 specialized institutes for applied research in the domain of healthy food and healthy living environments. It collaborates with Wageningen University under the external brand “Wageningen University & Research” (WUR), one of the leading organizations in its domain worldwide.

WUR’s institute involved in Africa-milk: Wageningen Livestock Research (WLR) is WUR’s animal science contract research institute. WLR’s international mission is to contribute with expertise, research and capacity building to sustainable intensification of livestock production worldwide. WLR’s has a longstanding experience in Europe and the Global South. East Africa is a key focal area, where WLR provides technical assistance to a number of development projects and private sector parties in subsector development dairy, poultry and pigs, sustainable intensification, fodder improvements, nutrient cycles, robust breeds, farm management.

Some ongoing or recent projects on milk in Africa involving WLR:

WLR brings to Africa-Milk the following expertise:

  • Dairy farming system and value chain analysis, multi-stakeholder process facilitation (Task 1);
  • Institutional innovations on milk quality assurance, value chain coordination, profitability, input&service provision models/innovation support systems, and inclusiveness (Task 2);
  • Fodder production, preservation and animal nutrition solutions in the context of animal husbandry and farm management; as well as on emissions and intensification (Task 3);
  • Adaptive management, M&E systems, and documentation of innovations that provide opportunities for sharing and joint learning with producers, industry and research partners (Task 4).
