Tasks

Africa-Milk : Impact pathway

Task 1 : Baseline studies Task 2 : Innovations at milkshed level Task 3 : Innovations at farm level Task 4 : Impacts on dairy business, farmer income, food security, local jobs, environment
  • Baseline studies, establishment of local dairy innovation platforms

For each dairy included in the project, Task 1 aims to characterize how milk is produced and collected, and how to organize the partnership in the project in order to identify: specific opportunities and constraints regarding milk production and collection that need to be addressed; potential innovations to be assessed and prioritized for implementation; key stakeholders to be involved in the DIPs; and criteria for M&E to be established.
  • Co-design of efficient and inclusive milk collection systems

Task 2 will work on the co-design and implementation of organizational and institutional innovations that support inclusive and efficient milk collection systems. In each case, Task 2 will encourage participation of producers organizations and dairies in the design and implementation of new contractual arrangements, that secure local milk sourcing in terms of quantity (milk intake), seasonality (regularity of deliveries throughout the year, e.g., linked with a season-based payment system), quality (quality-based milk payments), and sustainability.
  • Co-design of intensive and ecological dairy farming systems

Task 3 will focus on co-design and implementation of technical innovations at the farm level aimed at the ecological intensification of milk production. In order to address the constraints of productivity and sustainability identified in Task 1, this will concern in particular, cow feeding systems using local resources, and simple practices to improve milk hygiene.
  • Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning

Task 4 will focus on assessment of the impact and sustainability of innovations.
