Overview of national dairy sectors and Africa-milk’s dairy processors

The four African countries

The four African countries have been selected to cover diverse agro-climatic contexts, from low-altitude savannah regions (Senegal, Burkina Faso) to high- and medium altitude tropical areas (Madagascar, Kenya), and a large diversity of dairy sector (Table 1):

Africa-milk works with nine milk processors

Africa-milk works with nine milk processors (two per country in Senegal, Burkina and Madagascar, and three in Kenya) and with the network of their milk suppliers (milk farmers, collectors). These dairy processors have been selected to cover a large diversity of size and milk production features (Table 2):

The dairy sector in Burkina Faso is characterized by a high dispersion of production throughout the country and a low industrial development around a few artisanal dairy processors.
  • KENYA

Kenya is the leading milk producer in East Africa. Dairy is the largest agricultural sub-sector in Kenya in terms of income and employment creation contributing to 4% to overall GDP.
  • MADAGASCAR

The dairy sector in Madagascar is mainly concentrated in the dairy triangle of Vakinankaratra province.
  • SENEGAL

The dairy sector in Senegal is characterized by a high dispersion of production throughout the country and an intermediate industrial development, with a few industrial dairy plants and many artisanal dairy processors.
